Let's learn how to express a wish using examples!


Let’s start with the easy one, wishes for the FUTURE
I wish +(I/ you/ he/ it/ they) + (would/ could) + (verb)

  • I wish I could find a better job.
  • I wish he would buy me flowers
  • I wish I could go to the party this weekend
  • I wish they would give me a promotion!
  • I wish it would stop raining!


Now wishes about the present moment!
I wish + (I/ you/ he/ it/ they) + (verb in past simple)

  • I wish I had more time
  • I wish I wasn’t so busy.
  • I wish I had more money
  • I wish I was more beautiful!
  • I wish I were thinner!


We use the past perfect for wishes in the PAST:

I wish + (I/ you/ he/ it/ they) + (verb in past perfect)

  1. I wish I had taken your advice
  2. I wish I hadn't drunk so much wine!
  3. I wish I had gone to university.
  4. He wishes he had invested his savings
