How do we say “to be” in Past tense? With "was & were"


Let’s begin with WHEN do we use "to be" in past simple.


We use it to talk about a past event:

"I was in peru last week"


Or a past status:

"I was a member of the Rotary club"


  • It could be something that happened 
  • yesterday, 
  • last week, 
  • last year, 
  • a 1000 years ago.
  • and could be something that happened even a minute ago!


How do we say “to be” in Past tense? With "was & were, Simplifying English

We usually add time expressions such as yesterday, last week .. but not always!
